JUNETEENTH | FREEDOM DAY

Dearest Night Owls,

Today, let us celebrate the day that announced freedom and end to slavery. Unfortunately, slavery or enslaving human beings of color will always be a abhorrent piece of our nation's history. Enslaving people of color should never have existed in the first place, and it sickens me that claiming ownership of another human being was customary for a long time. Just the whole idea of slavery makes me so sick to my stomach, and ashamed to be considered as a "white" person. I don't identify as a "white" person, but the rest of the world would identify me as "white" in color.

I hope you all find a way to show some respect and honor the importance of this day. Just a couple of days ago, Juneteenth became a federal holiday. That is a HUGE deal. Try to do something, anything, to educate yourself on why this is a day to celebrate. Juneteenth didn't completely end slavery in the sense that people of color were entirely free. It was, however, a step in the right direction. A step that never should have needed to be taken because no one has a right to claim ownership over another human being.

Today was a pretty standard day for me. I completed my shift at work, and I was lucky enough to spend some time with my dear furry friends. My feline friend, Pickles, stopped by at an odd time. After 05:00 AM, Pickles came over to show some love and friendship. After work, I was able to spend sometime with "Girl Squirrel" before heading home.

I spent most of today relaxing in bed. I slept a little bit of time in bed, and woke up after 03:46 PM. I had a dream of the raven-haired boy. I longed to stare into those deep, brown eyes once more. If not in this reality, at least, in my dream.

Even after I was able to get some sleep, I feel that it was not enough. I am ready to go back to sleep. I am still feeling so tired. Tomorrow, I have a long day ahead of me. I will be spending my day, tomorrow, volunteering at Cascadia's administration building. Today and tomorrow, Cascadia is hosting a FREE COVID-19 vaccine event. I will be attending all day, tomorrow, checking people in and screening them for the vaccine. I am looking forward to it. I want to give back when I can, and do something new that I have never done before.
